Leading-edge vortex dynamics on plunging airfoils and wings

The vortex dynamics of leading-edge vortices on plunging high-aspect-ratio ( AR = 10) wings and airfoils were investigated by means volumetric velocity measurements, numerical simulations stability analysis to understand the deformation filament spanwise instabilities. filaments both wing airfoil exhibit waves, but with different origins. presence a wing-tip causes leg remain attached upper surface, while initial near tip resembles helical vortex. essential features can be modelled as an initially L -shaped semi-infinite column. In contrast, instability is well captured counter-rotating pairs, which are formed either trailing-edge or secondary rolled-up from surface. wavelengths observed in experiments agreement pairs unequal strength.
